Manika is a single mother living in Rumah Papan, Selangor. Her husband passed away a year and half ago after due to a heart attack. The poor weaver had to evacuate the flat they were living in as it was her husband’s employment benefit. Since then, Manika faces financial difficulty as she has to rent a RM400 per month flat together with her 23-year old son who earns RM1000 per month from a furniture shop. Gaining handicraft experience after her husband’s death has helped her to generate home-based income to pay for household expenses. Although she is uneducated and relies on public transport, she is determined to give herself and her son a better live through her new micro-business in eco-baskets. (October, 09)
